Keith Jarrett clips

It's a bitter cold Sunday afternoon and if you're reading this the day I posted it, you're probably immersed in (American) football or trying steadfastly to avoid those who are.

So anyway, what the heck, here's a few clips of pianist Keith Jarrett, one of my favorite musicians, in a variety of contexts:

Spiral Dance, Hannover DE, 1976

Here he is in 1976, with his band of mathematical Scandanavians - Jan Garbarek on sax, Jon Christensen on drums, and Palle Danielsson on bass. On record this tune is ~5 minutes. At fifteen (the first five minutes of the clip is just Jarrett feelin' the spirit), this approaches trance. Well, trance, but played by people who actually understand musical theory.

Solo, 1984 Tokyo - Encore

When he stands up, you know it's serious. Some have said Jarrett's solo concerts are an attempt to reintegrate improvisation and classical music. From this layman's standpoint frankly what comes to mind is Jarrett's ability to create themes out of absolutely nothing, turn them inside out, and then play them through to palpable climaxes.

1970 w/ Paul Motian, Charlie Haden

Beautiful melodies amidst total anarchy. Love how Haden blows on his hands near the end of the clip. Charlie Haden - bass, Paul Motian - drums.
